Callaway Big Bertha B21 Driver Review

This Callaway driver promises the holy grail of driver performance - a combination of low spin and forgiveness with some slice-fighting capability thrown in for good measure. Find out more about the technology here.

The target golfer is anyone who struggles with a miss to the right, especially a shot pattern that is accentuated by excessive spin from a downward attack angle where the ball travels across the fairway rather than down it.

Admittedly, this is the most common shot pattern amongst amateur golfers but its appeal is somewhat limited in that it immediately eliminates anyone that draws the ball, or who’s bad shot is a hook, given this driver has even more draw bias built in than the Callaway Mavrik Max from a couple of years ago.

At address, the footprint is generous and the blue carbon crown with red lines adds a modern touch. It is a little triangular in shape too, reminiscent of the impressive Big Bertha Fusion driver but a little less drastic.

We tested a 10.5° head lofted down to 9.5° with the stock RCH 55 shaft. We’re aware, as a fast-swinging golfer with a natural draw, we are not the target demographic golfer for this driver, and as such weren’t expecting the numbers to compete with what we currently play. Nonetheless, there were some interesting findings from our testing on the Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor.

Firstly, even in a higher loft than we usually play this driver produced impressive ball speeds averaging 158mph, comparable with drivers from this year we’ve tested in lower lofts.

The launch angle of 16° is high but not excessive but it was the spin that hurt us in terms of generating maximum distance, with an average of 2,660 rpm where we’d normally like to be closer to the 2,000rpm mark.

This will be down to the set-up of the driver and can be easily rectified via a fitting but it wasn't as high as we were expecting it to be. An average peak height of 46 yards shows us this driver has no issue in getting the ball up in the air and keeping it there, with an average carry of 266 yards.

The shot pattern was a strong draw every time with some initial misses to the left rectified via a change in aim. Make no mistake, as someone with a tendency to produce a slight draw it is almost impossible to hit a fade with this driver, and as such it is one of the best drivers for slicers out there.

On the range once our aim was calibrated correctly, we could hit shots that finished close to the target line with regularity and with a stronger flight than we were expecting. The feel of this driver is also worth mentioning - it has a light feel, partly down to the 55g shaft, and a solid yet explosive feel off the middle plus it felt noticeably stable on those all-too-common mishits too.

We found it to protect well from even quite strong winds and, although it’s not fully waterproof, it is resistant to the odd shower, making it a good one-layer garment in most autumnal and less-severe winter conditions. The adjustable cuffs further enhance fit and feel and, overall, it’s a very comfortable windjacket.

Available in four colours – Quarry Heather, Dark Moody Heather, Caviar Heather and Asphalt Heather, it’s a good-looking ¼ zip that could easily be worn off course as well as on.

Callaway Launches Tech-Driven Autumn Winter 2021 Collection

Callaway Launches New Jaws Full Toe Wedge

Callaway has announced the launch of the new Jaws Full Toe wedge, the most technically advanced and versatile Callaway wedge to date.

It follows the launch of the Jaws Mack Daddy 5 in 2019 and has already gone in the bag of tour staff player Jon Rahm.

Brought in to replace the PM Grind wedge, the Jaws Full Toe is designed to give golfers control on all types of wedge shots - from chips, pitches, flops, bunker shots, and full shots into the green.

Callaway's Jaws grooves have been extended all the way across the face to provide spin anywhere that the golfer makes contact.

Callaway has also added a raw face for the first time in a wedge and, coupled with offset groove-in-groove technology, the wedges are said to give golfers the spin and control needed to approach any shot with confidence.

Aside from spin, the Jaws Full Toe wedge also offers greenside versatility.

The Full Toe shape and a specialised C-Grind is said to make bunker shots, high flop shots, and short pitches and chips easier to hit from a multitude of lies around the course.

The Jaws Toe Pad pushes the CG higher, creating a lower, more controlled trajectory ideal for improved control on full wedge shots.

Callaway's new Variable Weight Port System moves the CG away from the hosel for solid contact and enhanced feel.

The Jaws Full Toe wedge comes with a premium Lamkin UTX grip and True Temper’s newest Dynamic Gold Spinner shaft in steel as standard, or a Project X Catalyst wedge shaft in graphite, and is available in two finishes, Raw Face Chrome and Raw Black.

Jon Rahm and Callaway have created a formidable partnership on Tour that has seen the Spaniard break his Major duck and become a top ten regular on Tour.

How Jon Rahm And Callaway Became The Most Formidable Partnership On Tour

Jon Rahm’s maiden Major victory at the US Open last month was a momentous occasion for a player who had been waiting a number of years to break his Major duck.

It was also a big win for Rahm’s club manufacturer, Callaway, who celebrated its second Major victory of the year after Phil Mickelson’s triumph at the PGA Championship in May.

Rahm signed with Callaway in January this year, and quickly cited the reason for the switch was “to win Majors”.

Less than a year in, he is a Major champion and the Spaniard has clearly struck up quite the partnership with Callaway.

Since making the switch, Rahm has needed little to no time to adjust. Alongside his epic Major victory at Torrey Pines, he currently has a mammoth eleven top 10 finishes on Tour, three more than his nearest rival Jordan Spieth.

Speaking after his US Open victory, Rahm was quick to thank the team at Callaway for helping him achieve his major goal.

“For all those people that might have doubted the manufacturer change, there’s a reason why I believed I could get better. The new ball and the new irons allow me to hit certain shots I simply wasn’t capable of doing before.

“I need to say a huge thank you to the team at Callaway. I’ve been a real headache for them because I’ve asked them to build so many putters for me to find the one I needed, but I’m pretty sure I’ve found the one now.”

The team at Callaway has worked incredibly hard alongside Rahm to find him the right putter that would ultimately secure him a maiden Major title.

The hard work paid off, and Rahm made two clutch birdie putts on the 17th and 18th holes at Torrey Pines that ultimately won him the championship.

The Odyssey White Hot OG Rossie S putter he used at the US Open is a one-of-a-kind custom made by Callaway at the Ely Callaway Performance Centre, just weeks before the tournament started.

It was first in Rahm’s bag during The Memorial tournament the week before after he had been using the Odyssey Ten 2-Ball as his gamer for most of the year.

Despite statistical success on the greens all season, Rahm and Callaway wanted to leave no stone unturned in his venture to turn top 10 finishes into Major wins.

Rahm’s custom Rossie has no sightline on the back - at his request - as he doesn’t respond well to anything linear on the putter head that tends to disrupt his visuals.

His putter also has Odyssey’s Micro Hinge Star insert that gives him a crisper feel while coming off the face hotter than the normal insert found on the White Hot OG range of putters, allowing him to maintain pace on his putts.

As well as his newly beloved gamer, Rahm’s love affair with the Callaway Chrome Soft X ball is another reason why his switch to Callaway has been so successful, so quickly.

As well as giving him immense ball speeds, it also gives him superior control from 150 yards and in.

Speaking about an 8 iron he hit during the final round at the US Open, the Spaniard was clearly enamoured with the performance of his new Callaway ball.

“Being able to hit a shot high with spin but still hit it through the wind and land it short of the pin is what allowed me to stay aggressive all round.”

Rahm’s ability to control his golf ball around the green while still being able to power it through the wind is thanks to the Chrome Soft X’s thinner cover and new mantle system.

The mantle system on the ball combines a softer inner mantle with a firmer outer mantle. The firmer mantle works with the thinner cover to promote increased greenside spin while the large SoftFast core promotes faster ball speeds.

Rahm is incredibly tuned in to his equipment choices and his new irons give him the same amount of control and precision the Chrome Soft X has.

The Callaway Apex TCB iron is the perfect package for Rahm, with a combination of lofts, bounce and blade lengths preferred by Tour pros.

Finally, at the top end of his bag, Rahm’s switch to Callaway’s Epic Speed family of driver and fairway woods has made him even more prolific off the tee.

He uses the Callaway Epic Speed Triple Diamond driver at 10.5 degrees with a Aldila Tour Green 75 TX shaft, a set up which has propelled him to second on Tour in strokes gained off the tee.

Callaway continues to be pioneers when it comes to using Artificial Intelligence in designing and crafting golf clubs, and the Epic Speed range of woods is no different.

Callaway redesigned its Jailbreak Speed Frame using A.I. and the new structure has enhanced horizontal and torsional stability to increase ball speeds across the face.

The A.I designed Flash Face in the Epic Speed drivers is then specifically engineered to optimise the Jailbreak Speed Frame, promoting fast speeds across a more expansive area.

The use of artificial intelligence in the Epic Speed drivers means they suit a wide range of players, Tour pros or otherwise.

Alongside the team at Callaway, Jon Rahm used his intuition for equipment - and plenty of testing - to match the technologically advanced head with the right shaft, loft and weights to provide ultimate performance for his swing.

Standing on the 18th green at Torrey Pines with the US Open Championship Trophy held in his arms, Rahm proudly told the media, “There’s a reason why I believed I could get better.”

We loved how unrestricted it allowed us to feel on the course thanks to the Swing Tech fabrics, which deliver more stretch than ever to maximise the range of motion, no matter the swing. Additionally, it's really light and comfortable, allowing for good ventilation and just providing an all-round pleasant experience from start to finish. 

This eye-catching shirt is sure to draw some attention and, coming in at a great price, we think it will be a real hit with golfers.

Who doesn’t love a good quarter zip? They are a staple of the golfer’s wardrobe and the Pieced Printed Pullover from Callaway is up there with the best of them in every department.

Specifically, we enjoyed testing this as it can be worn in most conditions and settings, whether on the course or not, and it is also made with Swing Tech fabrics for the ultimate in performance. Although an additional layer, we felt no resistance whatsoever. 

Its design is one of subtlety, with flashes of pink trim and white detailing across the chest meaning it will be popular among a wide range of style preferences. Banish the old and pick up a new go-to quarter zip. You won’t regret it. 

This Micro Geo Jacquard polo is a stylish t-shirt that comes with a tour logo on the right sleeve as well as a nice chest block and a three colourway shoulder design. We also found it to be really comfortable and thought it looked great when complemented by a colour-coordinated pair of trousers.

The subtle detailing on the collar adds a nice finishing touch to what is a brilliant top from Callaway and one that delivers exceptional value for money.

Completing the men’s collection is Callaway’s Chev Tech Trouser II. With its stretching capabilities and lightweight construction, this is one of the most comfortable pairs of trousers we’ve tested in a long time. 

Not only did we enjoy the feel on offer but we also found them to fit really well in all areas, which is one of the hardest parts of finding the perfect trouser for you. There was enough space around the thighs without it getting too roomy and around the lower leg and ankle was the same. 

Finally, the front and back pockets provide ample space for a golfer's needs and ensure nothing should slip out accidentally. Our only wish is that there were more colour options available. 

Women's Collection

The women’s range also benefits from Callaway’s performance-driven approach to its 2021 Spring/Summer collection. In this polo, style is fused with substance to create something that will help golfers perform at their best on the course and look stylish in any setting.

Once again, we noticed that the Swing Tech fabric came into its own to provide unparalleled levels of freedom in the swing. We really felt the difference in stretch compared to other garments we often wear on the course.

This one is a real statement. Part of the brand’s X range that has been designed with a unique and modern look in mind, on first glance it’s clear to see that has been achieved. A white main body is contrasted by a sporadic pattern of multicoloured triangles that really grew on us quickly, while the ‘beetle green’ collar, shoulder and cuff round off the look nicely. 

And as well as the unique style, the fit of this polo offers something different. Golfers who prefer something that hugs the chest and arms will love this shirt as it combines a close fit with performance elsewhere. 

Not something we would normally go for, but in the end we were very impressed with everything this shirt has to offer, and we’re confident you will be too.

You don’t see as many classic sweaters in the game of golf anymore. Whether it’s a variation of the zipped pullover, or even the golf hoodie that’s risen to prominence very recently, the days when most took to the course in your basic sweater are on the decline. But there’s still absolutely a place for them, which is why it’s great to see one included in Callaway’s latest apparel collection.

And what better material to use than merino. Remaining true to the brand’s sustainability pledge, recycled plastics have also been used in the construction of this extremely comfortable sweater that kept us warm in cooler conditions. 

Elsewhere, beetle green is back but this time it’s the main colour, with just a small touch of white contrast detailing on the collar and cuff in a design that we found to our liking. And similarly to the Geo Print polo, it is quite a figure-hugging garment, perfect for those with a physique they want to show off. This makes it a little awkward to take off and put on, but such a small sacrifice is well worth it for this sweater that we think is a bargain.

A good belt should complement an outfit rather than steal the headlines, which is what Callaway’s V Logo product does. And not only does it look the part on one side, but it’s also reversible, meaning you essentially get two great options for the price of one. 

Another thing we really liked about it is the fact that it’s cut to fit. Nobody wants to see that awkward spare bit of belt dangling down the side of their trousers, so this is a big plus. It’s not leather but that makes it comfortable and weightless while it does its primary job and we also really liked the simplicity of the buckle design. It’s not flashy like some of the garish products on the market these days, so it acts as a perfect buffer between upper and lower layers.

There are no airs and graces about this well-designed belt that is easy to slip on and off and would make a great addition to anyone’s wardrobe.

Whether a fashion statement or something to protect people from the sun, a cap is a favourite among golfers and can round out an outfit nicely. That’s certainly what we found with Callaway’s Side Crested offering.

The story on the unusual club that propelled Mickelson to greatness at the 2021 PGA Championship

The Unusual Club That Propelled Mickelson To PGA Glory

Phil Mickelson rewrote the history books yesterday with a ground-breaking performance at the PGA Championship, becoming the oldest player to win a major championship.

Most surprising perhaps, other than lifting the trophy a month shy of his 51st birthday, was his ability to be long and find fairways on a blustery day at Kiawah Island.

Mickelson is well-known for his desire to “hit bombs” but this has often come to the detriment of accuracy. Yet Mickelson frequently found himself on the short grass, and if not he was only a few yards from it in good position to find the green.

He led the field in Strokes Gained off the tee and was 15th in driving distance, averaging 313 yards but notably hit the longest drive of the week on the 16th hole on Sunday past playing partner Brooks Koepka.

A pivotal role in his performance comes down to the new Callaway driver Mickelson put in the bag this week.

A Jonathan Wall recently outlined for Golf.com, Mickelson began his quest for extra distance at the 2020 Masters by testing a 48-inch driver.

Fast forward to this week, after trying out multiple heads and shaft designs, Mickelson put a 47.9375” Callaway Epic Speed prototype driver in play.

This driver is a long way from what you could buy at retail. Not only does the head only have six degrees of loft (playing at 5.25°) but the head weight is 188 grams, down from a normal head weight of around 200 grams, to account for the longer shaft.

The shaft itself is an untipped Fujikura Ventus Black 6TX shaft made specifically for the head, helping Mickelson optimise spin rates and dispersion.

Mickelson is no stranger to having unique custom clubs in his bag. He also had a TaylorMade Original “One” Mini driver in the bag, that was until third round.

“ Yesterday I hit a couple of squirrelly shots on 12 and 13 and the face on my 2-wood flattened. Fortunately I had a backup head and swapped it out and hit it great today,” Mickelson explained after his win.

'Lefty' also had issues with other clubs in his bag during the week, but luckily he had back up clubs with him that could make a substitute appearance.

“As I was teeing off today my 2-iron face cracked. Tim noticed when I put it back that it had cracked across the face. But fortunately I had a 4-wood that's a very comparable club to that 1-iron distance-wise and I was able to use that club effectively. I used it off 3 tee, 4 tee. There was a few times that I hit it and I hit that club very well.”

“It's just one of those things that happens and you just have to be prepared for it, which is why I bring backup clubs out here.”

Interestingly, Mickelson also utilised the Triple Track alignment lines on his Callaway Chrome Soft X ball both off the tee and on the greens to help hit his start lines.

Given how far the modern-day driver can be hit and the difficulty a lot of us have in getting the most out of a 3-iron we’re looking for a lot from our hybrids.

The advantages are obvious and plenty, we can have the centre of gravity relatively low to promote a high launch and there is plenty of forgiveness but we still need to get it out there 200 yards plus and a lot of its work might be done from the rough.

Looks wise at address there is definite iron-like profile to it so, if your irons stop at the 5, then there is a very easy flow to the set by adding this.

This is for the player who wants more of that iron-type trajectory and for the player who generates plenty of head speed but, with Callaway’s Face Cup Technology, there is great speed and spin consistency across the face.

Workable Firepower

Under the bonnet are the new Jailbreak A.I. Velocity blades which have been designed to increase the vertical stiffness near the sole of the club and to create more speed low on the face where the mishits tend to occur with the hybrid.

During research the computer threw up improvements to the original Jailbreak concept and, in short, that has led to moving the connection points more to the heel and toe which allows the face to have a more flexible region.

This club packs a punch – just the look of it will start your mind racing about drilling one into the wind on a par 5 from distance – and there is the workability and control that the strong player will be looking for, rather than something just designed to get the ball up in the air.

Off the back of the highly popular Mavrik range, Callaway has once again used Artificial Intelligence to push the boundaries of what is possible in a fairway wood.

For 2021 and the Epic Speed range, Callaway has made its first real upgrade to this design. Inspired by A.I., what have been coined the ‘Velocity Blades’ are now more angled and spread out towards the heel and toe, allowing the forged face to flex even more.

Fast and Forgiving

The result is a fairway wood that is as hot as it gets. Although not officially a Sub Zero model, it behaves like one, offering incredible distance thanks to its low spinning nature. We were really impressed with how penetrating the flight was, making it ideal for using off a tee as well as in windy conditions.

It’s standard practice for club manufacturers to claim a new product is longer and straighter than ever before, but with Callaway, you have a brand that is able to back this up with technology intended to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

So if you’re a golfer with a high swing speed and often favour this option over a driver or a less forgiving utility iron, the Epic Speed will be a brilliant fit for your game.

It seems that ‘two-sizes-no-longer-fit-all’ when it comes to tour-calibre golf balls, with Callaway this year joining Titleist in offering a second version of its X model, promising even lower spin with the driver.

The Chrome Soft X LS is a four-piece ball aimed at good players whose perfect recipe for longer, straighter drives is lower spin and higher launch off the driver than with the standard X model.

One of the best premium golf balls on the market, the X LS is essentially a response to golf’s new breed of bombers who just want to hit the ball high and straight off the tee without worrying too much about working it one way or the other.

Distance With Control

However, to imply that Chrome Soft X LS is purely a distance ball would be wide of the mark. Callaway has engineered its four layers to ensure that distance is not at the cost of feel and control. Yes, the Dual Mantle System combines a soft inner mantle with a highly resilient firm outer mantle to generate fast ball speeds and maximum overall distance.

But the same soft, thin urethane cover that helps promote low spin off the driver is also able to generate higher spin when you’re swinging it slower closer to the green. It also launches a little lower on pitch shots helping us enjoy good success with that slightly driven, second-bounce checker!

There are lots of factors to consider when choosing a golf ball, and we’d recommend studying the little chart on Callaway’s website that sums up the varying benefits of all three Chrome Soft models.

But if we were to summarise two key things, those blessed with a decent amount of clubhead speed will reap maximum benefits from the X LS’s low-spin, high-launch driver flight.

The Callaway Apex Pro targets the player looking to shape the ball and control its flight. It’s an iron that will very much suit lower handicappers or those with good ball-striking skills.

Super Soft Feel

The soft feel comes from a forged 1025 mild carbon steel body and Callaway’s Urethane Microspheres. These are over one million tiny air pockets that absorb unwanted vibration without slowing the face.

We found the Apex Pro iron easier to manipulate than the standard Apex. It’s great for shot shaping, and it produces a solid and penetrating ball flight.

For lower handicappers, this iron can do pretty much anything you want it to. It launches consistently, spin rates are also very steady, it offers great feel and a good amount of power. All in all, it’s a very impressive club that also looks stunning in the bag.

Callaway has brought out three excellent drivers this year and in our full review we discussed the pros and cons of all three.

But not wanting to sit on the fence, if we were pushed to single out our favourite it would be the Epic Max LS. It is also one of the best drivers for mid-handicappers too.

It’s a little unusual in concept to have the low-spinning (LS) model with the Max (forgiving) franchise. Typically, low spin drivers are aimed at better players seeking a compact, workable shape but the Epic Max LS has a more stretched out look at address that will appeal to a wider player spectrum.

Not only that, but the ability to knock some spin off your drives will lead to increased distance for the majority of players. But will this also lead to a lack of control? Well not from our testing.

A.I. Technology

This driver has Callaway’s new Jailbreak Speedframe designed using Artificial Intelligence and forms a completely new shape, connecting with the head at four different points top and bottom to provide extra rigidity in the horizontal direction.

The result is a five per cent increase in efficiency and when combined with a lighter triaxial carbon crown and enhanced face design unique to every loft, should increase ball speed and forgiveness as well as spin consistency.

Sliding weights are less commonplace these days but there is a 13g sliding weight in the rear of the sole providing 14 yards of shot shape correction. We liked how we could tone down our draw shape with this feature, while others will appreciate the option of being able to eliminate one side of the golf course. It also strengthens forgiveness by matching up with your most common mishit on the face.

Factor all these elements in and the Epic Max LS is one of the most comprehensive driver offerings around this year, making it a no-brainer for our list and one you should certainly try if you’re looking to upgrade your big stick this year.

This club is all about added assistance without compromising control or versatility and it is highly successful in this regard. There’s plenty of forgiveness on full shots and an excellent feel, something some golfers fear they will have to sacrifice in a cavity-back wedge.

There’s a slightly lowered leading edge in the higher lofts, which makes standard bunker shots an easier proposition. And even our concerns about how flush that leading edge would sit elsewhere given the wide sole and high bounce were allayed.

Callaway has today unveiled its new Epic 21 drivers and fairways to replace the Epic Flash range and sit alongside the Mavrik offerings launched last year.

The new line of Epic 21 drivers feature the next generation of Jailbreak called Speed Frame. On previous drivers, Jailbreak has taken the form of two bars that connect the top and bottom of the head and allow the clubface to take more of the load at impact.

Callaway Epic 21 Drivers Review

But the SpeedFrame has been designed using Artificial Intelligence and forms a completely new shape, connecting with the head at four different points top and bottom to provide extra rigidity in the horizontal direction.

The result, Callaway say, is a five per cent increase in efficiency and when combined with a lighter triaxial carbon crown and enhanced face design unique to every loft, should increase ball speed and forgiveness as well as spin consistency.

Callaway Epic Drivers

There are three models to choose from. The Epic Speed is the fastest as it has the same cyclone shape as last year’s Mavrik driver where the tail of the driver lifts up to improve airflow over the head during the swing to increase clubhead speed for the same amount of effort.

It has the same shot shape bias as Mavrik too but with a significantly higher MOI.

The Epic Max is the most forgiving driver and highest launching of any Epic driver to date. It features an adjustable 17g weight that creates up to 16 yards of shot shape correction, which rises to 20 yards when you factor in the draw settings on the Opti-Fit hosel.

Then there’s the Epic Max LS, which is the better player driver with low spin but higher MOI than the Mavrik Sub Zero. It is the most fade capable of the three drivers thanks to the 13g sliding weight providing 14 yards of shot shape correction.

Both the Epic Speed and Epic Max fairways feature fixed hosels and Jailbreak A.I. Velocity Blades, which spreads the angles of the blades to stiffen the body and provide more stability in all directions for maximum ball speed across the face.

The Epic Speed will provide a more penetrating flight versus the more forgiving, higher launching Epic Max which also has interchangeable 2g and 14g weights to adjust launch and spin.

Callaway has today unveiled a comprehensive new range of Apex 21 irons catering for more types of player that seeking Apex-like feel and distance control.

Apex has always represented excellent all-round performance for the serious golfer, both as a distance iron and better-player model, and the Apex 21 takes this a step further by being the first forged iron with a Flash Face Cup designed with Artificial Intelligence for faster ball speeds.

Increased forgiveness comes from a new Tungsten Energy Core, which is five times heavier than the tungsten weight in the Apex 19 irons to promote higher and more consistent launch and spin.

The body of the iron is forged from a 1025 mild carbon steel body for a soft feel, assisted by Callaway’s urethane microspheres to deliver exceptional sound and feel at impact. The improved shaping of the head also helps to enhance feel through the turf.

The new Apex DCB opens up Apex to more distance-orientated players by delivering the look, feel and performance of a forged players club with the forgiveness of a deep cavity back design.

Apex DCB is the most forgiving Apex iron Callaway has ever made thanks to the deep cavity back and enhanced sole width being engineered for easy launch and solid turf interaction out of a variety of lies.

Up to 50 grams of tungsten in the long and mid irons precisely positions the CG to promote launch throughout the set, and more forgiveness on off- centre shots. To ensure feel isn’t sacrificed, the Apex DCB irons have the urethane microspheres to improve the sound while the improved shaping helps enhance feel through the turf.

For the golfers that seeks a more compact profile at address, there’s the new Apex 21 Pro iron. It boasts the same A.I.-designed Flash Face Cup and urethane microspheres in an all-new forged 1025 hollow body construction.

For the first time in Apex Pro, a Tungsten Energy Core includes up to 90 grams of tungsten per iron to improve launch characteristics while simultaneously improving forgiveness.

For the better player seeking the ultimate in feel and shot making, there’s the new Apex MB iron. This muscleback boasts a classic shape with a traditional, thin topline, refined sole, compact blade length and stunning chrome finish.

Precision grooves are designed to promote the high level of control and consistent spin as well as reducing fliers from the rough to deliver even more control. A new weight in the centre of the clubhead allows swing weights to be precisely dialled in without sacrificing performance.

Another brand new model in the Apex line is the Apex TCB. This custom-order only model is a tour-inspired forged players’ cavity back iron designed specifically for tour and elite players.

It has a similar footprint to the X-Forged iron from 2018 but now uses a 1025 full hollow body construction coupled with a face plate and visible tungsten weighting to maximise performance.

All the Apex irons go on sale February 11th with an RRP of £1,089 in steel and £1,399 in graphite.

Joining the five new iron models are two Apex 21 hybrids. The Apex 21 hybrid feature A.I. designed Jailbreak blades that maximise ball speed and distance.

They do this by increasing the vertical stiffness near the sole of the club, creating more speed low on the face where players often mishit their hybrids.

These blades also allow the Face Cup to flex on the crown to promote better spin rate consistency, and the bars are spread to enhance torsional stiffness, leading to more forgiveness all across the face.

A large amount of tungsten weighting in each loft offering precisely positions the CG lower to promote high launch, and to provide more forgiveness on off-centre shots.

The Apex 21 hybrid also has an adjustable hosel for loft and lie angle, which differs to the fixed hosel on the Apex 21 Pro hybrid.

The model is smaller and more iron-like, offering greater control of ball flight and workability for the better player. It boasts a forged 455 High Strength Face Cup for strength and flexibility while aiding spin consistency across the face.

World No.2 Jon Rahm Signs With Callaway Golf

World No.2 Jon Rahm has signed with Callaway Golf and will use a full bag of the company's equipment.

The Spaniard had been with TaylorMade and adidas since turning pro in 2016 but he will now play Callaway clubs and wear Callaway-owned Travis Mathew apparel.

Rahm is set to make his 2021 debut this week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii using a full bag of Callaway clubs, including prototype woods and irons, Callaway Mack Daddy Forged wedges, a Chrome Soft X ball and an Odyssey putter.

“I’m so happy to be joining Callaway, and I can’t wait to start the year,” Rahm said.

“The equipment is already performing well for me, and in my first round with the new setup, I shot a course record 59 at Silverleaf. I have confidence in my new Callaway clubs – and especially the golf ball, which has really impressed me during the testing process.”

The former World No.1 has won 12 times as a professional and made his Ryder Cup debut in 2018.

Utility irons are a popular choice among low-handicap golfers and on Tour, especially when the links golf swing begins as golfers start to look for a fairway finder that keeps the ball low off the tee while also being a versatile option to hit into par fives.

Callaway has unveiled its latest model in the form of the new X-Forged UT iron, which boasts a hollow construction along with Callaway's A.I.-designed Flash Face Cup that creates a sophisticated face design for high ball speeds.

Joining the Jaws MD5 in Callaway’s range for 2020 and beyond is the new Mack Daddy CB wedge, a cavity back game-improvement option designed to produce good results into and around the green even if the swing or strike isn’t quite perfect.

The oversize design helps create a smooth transition from your cavity back irons to your wedges. A deep cavity back with a slightly larger head and thicker topline should inspire confidence over the ball, while Callaway’s Jaws grooves provide precise edge sharpness for maximum grip and spin from all types of lies.

On the sand wedge and lob wedge, the grooves extend all the way across the face to provide spin no matter where you strike the ball, even high up in the toe.

The Mack Daddy CB features two sole grinds, both engineered to promote consistency. In the lower lofts, a full sole provides iron-like turf interaction with moderate bounce. Callaway claims to have created the perfect driver for the higher handicapper, promising distance through low spin and slice correction while maintaining the all-important forgiveness.

Low spin via a low-forward centre of gravity and high MOI don’t normally go hand in hand but Callaway says its use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a new face material and Jailbreak bars has unlocked extra performance.

The larger A.I. Designed Flash Face SS21 has been made of a super strong, heat-treated TA-15 titanium, which allows for the complex face architecture required to promote optimal speed, forgiveness, and spin characteristics.

The driver also features a T2C Triaxial carbon crown, which allows weight to be redistributed to more desirable areas. To help fight your slice, this driver has reduced face progression to help start the ball more left, internal heel weighting and generates lower spin to help reduce the amount of curvature on the flight.

Two internal Jailbreak bars connect the sole and crown to promote fast ball speed while a completely new RCH shaft, designed by Callaway to specifically enhance the Big Bertha offering, has an Active Tip Flag section for easy launch.

The Big Bertha B21 fairway wood and hybrid share many of the same technologies as the driver as well as additional offset to promote a straighter flight. To further enhance launch and trajectory, the hybrids incorporate dual MIM’ed (Metal‐Injected Moulding) tungsten weights into the sole of the clubhead.

To make the Big Bertha B21 irons easy to hit they feature generous offset, wide soles and thick toplines to inspire confidence.

High balls speeds and increased spin robustness from every club in the set comes from the a unique Flash Face architecture on each individual iron designed by A.I. A tungsten toe weight centres the CG on the middle of the scorelines for forgiveness while a second visible tungsten weight sits low in the sole and to the rear to increase launch angle.

To improve feel, urethane microspheres are strategically designed to absorb unwanted vibration without reducing speed.

Key technology - A 34 per cent larger core creates higher launch and lower spin while the thinner, firmer outer core is reinforced with Graphene for better durability and more wedge spin. - A thinner urethane cover promotes increased ball speed and lower spin on full shots while maintaining high spin and soft feel around the green. - Also comes in firmer feeling Chrome Soft x and with or without the Triple Track alignment system.

GM Verdict Tour-calibre balls need to do a lot of things well and having tested Callaway’s latest Chrome Soft ball for 2020, we can attest that it ticks all the requisite boxes.

Off the tee, it provided a strong and noticeably stable ball flight in crosswinds, helping to maximize distance and accuracy. It was comparable with our current tour ball in terms of total yardage and we’re also confident it’s a marginally longer than the previous version.

Into greens, well-struck short irons stopped to attention, allowing you to be aggressive with your lines. As the name suggests, this ball along with the Srixon Z-Star will be one of the softest-feeling, tour-played offerings on the market, which won’t be to everyone’s taste. When we tested the new 2022 Chrome Soft X and Chrome Soft X LS, we noticed that both of those models felt hotter off the face of the putter and wedge.

The soft feel creates a slightly more muted sound when chipping and putting, but it doesn’t jump off the face uncontrollably. In fact, the speed matched up with other balls in the premium category. The feel of the 2020 Chrome Soft is similar to the newer Callaway Chrome Soft 2022 golf ball but there were some improvements, particularly in terms of ball speed from the new model.

The Triple Track option is especially effective when combined with an Odyssey Triple Track putter, but works very well without it for those seeking alignment assistance on the greens and even off the tee.

Callaway Mavrik Fairway Woods Review

The three Mavrik fairways (Standard, Max and Sub Zero) feature A.I.-designed Flash Faces specific to the three models, promoting optimum speed and spin. A high-strength C300 Maraging Steel face combined with Jailbreak maximizes ball speed.

After testing, it was the Sub Zero model turned out to be our favourite of the three. A fairway wood needs to look easy to hit while also appearing to be able to get the ball up in the air easily and it does this really well.

The compact shape remains inviting to the eye while the full-length white grooves highlight face alignment really effectively. You can see the standard Mavrik looks a little larger and has white grooves in the heel and toe to help frame the ball centrally.

Strike a few shots away with the Sub Zero and you instantly notice the hot, driver-like feel, especially from the sweetspot. While off-centre hits are punished more than on the standard Mavrik fairway, there is a decent level of forgiveness on offer, especially if you have chosen to position the heavier weight at the rear.

Performance wise, the Mavrik SZ delivers. In the stock 15°, for us it struck the ideal balance between high launch and low spin for our ball speed, producing average carries off the deck on the GCQuad launch monitor in excess of 251 yards. The slightly taller face also makes this a deadly weapon off the tee, with struck shots often not falling far short of where a typical drive would finish.

The standard fairway provided similar distance but with a touch more spin, which will help some golfers achieve more carry distance. The Max version looks a little more inviting to hit at address and also has some extra draw bias built in, ideal for golfers that struggle with a slice.

The reason we selected the Sub Zero as the best fairway wood of 2020 in a recent group test is because of its all-round playability. Yes it’s long and surprisingly forgiving for a low spin model, but if you like to shape the ball a certain way it will do that and it offers smooth and brisk interaction with the ground. If you plan on using it more off the tee, you can switch the weights around to lower the spin even more.

These grooves feature a 37° wall angle that makes them sharper for maximum grip and spin from all types of lie, while three raised micro-ridges between the grooves increase the number of contact points with the ball for even more spin.

On the sole grind front, there’s now a new low-bounce version of the W-Grind, featuring added sole taper and heel relief in the higher lofts, but we suspect that for most, the C-Grind will provide enough heel and toe relief to allow you to manipulate the face and play different shots from different lies. The standard W-Grind has more bounce making it ideal from the sand, while the new low-bounce version could be just the ticket for those with shallower swings or who play a lot of links golf.

The complete package

It’s not all about spin though. They look gorgeous in both finishes too with a fairly traditional shape, and they deliver a lovely buttery-soft feel on shots of all lengths thanks to their mild carbon steel heads.

We think you’ll struggle to find a better all-around wedge, but there’s no escaping the fact that spin is the main story here, with the Jaws MD5 really excelling on longer pitch shots and full shots. We’d even hazard that those who have never spun a wedge back in their lives might just surprise themselves with one of these in their hands!

It’s a sleek and attractive fairway with black head and orange highlights on the sole. At address, it sits neatly and the cambered sole inspires confidence that you can really get into the back of the ball from a variety of lies.

Distance boost

Callaway were confident that the Mavrik range would deliver increased distance compared to the preceding Epic range. In testing, we found this claim stands up. The Mavrik SZ fairway displays heightened efficiency in terms of translating clubhead to ball speed. The spin rate is lower, the flight is penetrating and more consistent and that means the overall distance is quite significantly up.

Jailbreak technology 

Although the Mavrik SZ is highly workable and the forward CG will help better players produce a more penetrating, lower spinning flight, it is still forgiving. This is thanks to the Jailbreak technology which really helps you get the most out of all your shots, even those that come from slightly lower in the face.

The Mavrik Sub Zero is a hugely impressive fairway that will suit the better player looking for a combination of maximum power and workability.

Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero Driver

Callaway’s latest Mavrik drivers are available in three different versions (standard, Sub Zero and Max). Despite its smaller head size, it was the Sub Zero that excelled for us in testing.

Despite the standard Mavrik model featuring a new Cyclone Aero shape, which is sweeps markedly upwards in the rear to reduce drag by up to 61 per cent compared to Epic Flash for added clubhead speed, we squeezed nearly 2mph more speed out of the Sub Zero. This lower-spinning model doesn’t have the new Cyclone Aero shape, but the smaller head size delivered more club speed for us.

The head on the Mavrik Sub Zero is shorter from front to back than the standard model, while the Max has the most stretched-out look of the three. The Sub Zero also offers adjustability via 14g and 2g weights that can be interchanged from front to back, and it was with the heavier weight in its more forgiving rear setting that we achieved our best results.

Solid performer

The Mavrik SZ driver feel incredibly solid off the improved Flash Face, giving you the impression that Callaway has left no stone unturned in the quest for maximum energy transfer at impact.

The spin you generate at impact will probably dictate which model works best for you, but for us, the Sub Zero’s combination of lower spin and four yards more carry just gave it the edge, even if the standard model was a little straighter. The Sub Zero’s slightly wider dispersion was not enough to cause us any concern.

The orange colour accents will grab your attention in the shop, but the all-important address look is a winner for us too, with a traditional shape and quite a refined look thanks to the carbon-fibre crown. All in all, a very strong performer.

Callaway Mavrik Irons Review

On the face of it, literally, the Mavrik range could well comprise one of the most complex design concepts we’ve seen in recent years – you can read more about the technology here. It features two oversized models built for distance and a more compact Pro model aimed at the slightly lower handicapper that still wants good distance in a more refined package.

The set up of the iron range is a little strange, it is actually the standard model that has the strongest loft (7-iron is 27°) whereas the Mavrik Max iron is more traditional at 30°, but has a longer stock shaft.

Consumers would be forgiven for thinking it was the Max that provided the most amount of distance, but given the difference in loft it was a good five yards behind the standard based on our testing on the Foresight Sports GCQuad using Titleist Pro V1x golf balls.

The Pro (7-iron 30.5°) and the Max actually produced similar ball speed and carry distances, but in very different ways. The Max launches the ball a lot higher with a touch more spin, undoubtedly producing good stopping power. It is also much more forgiving than the Pro, which requires more attention to be paid to the strike to achieve good distance.

The Mavrik and Mavrik Max aren’t the prettiest irons to look at behind the ball because of the very thick topline and varying degrees of offset. In stark contrast, the Mavrik Pro is a thing of beauty with its lighter satin chrome finish and players’ profile behind the ball.

If you’re looking for out and out distance, the Mavrik iron is clearly the way to go. Balls come off like a rocket with a powerful ‘thwack’ and with low spin helping to strengthen the flight. It is surprisingly forgiving for what is essentially a 5-iron with a 7 written on the bottom and gets the ball in the air with relative ease, although not as successfully as the Max.

Callaway Mavrik Drivers Review

Rogue was an underrated driver range and surpassing it was always going to be tricky for Callaway. Its replacement, Mavrik, has an updated Flash Face designed by a super computer (you can read more about the new technology here), so it promised a great deal... and delivered, to a degree.

It's worth noting that the new Rogue ST driver has now been launched in place of the Mavrik, bringing back the Rogue name from 2018.

We tested the standard and Sub Zero Mavrik drivers indoors on the Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor in 9° loft and the new Aldila Rogue 60x shaft, which is one of the stock options. We'll be sure to add in the performance of the Max driver to this review once we have tested it, as it's arrival was delayed.

On first inspection, the orange colour pops certainly catch your eye on the shelf. Some may say it cheapens the look, but it's certainly preferable to all black. At address they look modern with the carbon fibre weave pattern visible, a traditional shape without too many elements to distract you. The Sub Zero model is shorter from front to back while the standard is a little larger and the Max has the most stretched out look of all three.

The Mavrik drivers feel incredibly solid, like almost no energy is lost between the collision of club and ball, with a powerful thud sound we really enjoyed.

We were expecting the cyclone shape of the standard model to give us more clubhead speed compared to the Sub Zero, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, we swung the Mavrik Sub Zero driver nearly 2mph faster, perhaps due to the smaller size.

The Sub Zero, in its more forgiving weight setting with the heavier 14g weight at the rear, performed the best for us while also being playable on the course. While it didn’t quite give us the ball speed of the standard model, the lower spin helped us achieve carries that were four yards longer on average.

The standard model is unquestionably more forgiving and easier to hit straighter, was faster and more efficient off the face, and will benefit slower swing speeds or golfers that need more spin to maximize distance – it gave us 300 rpm more spin on average.

Out on the course, we were surprised at how easy it was to control direction with the Mavrik Sub Zero without losing out on distance. Distance with control is always a winning formula and this seemed to deliver it, especially on slight mishits. It can't save a really bad strike or swing, but it's certainly more user-friendly than Rogue.

Callaway Mavrik Range Revealed - Callaway has unveiled its new Mavrik range consisting of metalwoods and irons designed with help from a super computer

Replacing the Rogue range from 2018 comes Mavrik, which benefits from the next generation of Callaway’s Flash Face designed by an even more powerful super computer. It means that the standard, Sub Zero and Max Mavrik drivers, fairways and irons have a face design specific to the performance of each model thanks to use of Artificial Intelligence for improved performance across a wider area.

The complexity of each Mavrik driver face design demanded a stronger material to stand up to the stress of impact, so Callaway is using FS2S titanium - an exotic material that is remarkably strong and light.

Artificial Intelligence was also used to fine-tune the acoustics of the drivers via new internal titanium ribs for improved sound and feel. Jailbreak and a T2C Triaxial Carbon Crown continue to feature to promote faster ball speed and raise forgiveness via more efficient weight placement.

The standard Mavrik driver features a new Cyclone Aero shape, which is shallower from front to back with a flatter crown, and a sole design that sweeps upward dramatically in the rear to create a markedly higher trailing edge. This is said to reduce drag by up to 61 per cent compared with Epic Flash for added clubhead speed.

The smaller (450cc) Mavrik Sub Zero driver doesn’t have the head shape, but it does offer lower spin and two adjustable 14g and 2g front and back sole weights.

Finally, the Mavrik Max driver is suited to players that require forgiveness and slice correction. It boasts the largest footprint, highest MOI and most draw bias as well as interchangeable 2g and 14g sole weights.

The Mavrik fairways also feature A.I.-designed Flash Faces specific to the three models, promoting optimum speed and spin. A high-strength C300 Maraging Steel face combined with Jailbreak maximizes ball speed.

Along with the standard Mavrik fairway that has generous heel camber for versatility, there’s the draw-biased Max model, which is a new shape that is larger and 30 per cent more forgiving than Epic Flash and has a lower leading edge for better results from the deck. There’s also a Sub Zero model that features a tour profile and adjustable front/back weighting.

The Mavrik hybrids come in standard, Pro and Max versions and feature fully optimised Flash faces for the first time in every loft along with Jailbreak to enhance ball speed.

The Mavrik irons also feature Flash Faces designed by a super computer. This new Flash Face Cup with Artificial Intelligence creates a sophisticated face architecture for every loft in each of the three Mavrik iron models to significant boost in ball speed and increased spin robustness from every club in each set.

In the long irons, the faces are designed for launch and speed, while in the mid-irons the faces are engineered for speed and spin consistency. And in the short irons, the faces are optimized for spin and precision to promote pinpoint shot-making.

A Tungsten Energy Core ensures custom tungsten weights are precisely positioned in each iron to optimize launch and trajectory, enveloped in over 1 million urethane microspheres to improve feel without affecting speed.

The Mavrik irons should appeal to a wide range of players, while the Mavrik Pro Irons feature a more compact head shape, flatter lie angle and thinner topline that better players prefer for better workability and control. Looks Stunning from every angle, the Epic Forged combines a relatively thick topline to promote confidence with a hint of offset and a premium polished finish.

GM Verdict The Epic Forged is a curious offering. Premium-priced and incredibly strong in loft (the 7-iron is 27°), it is an iron set built for the golfer seeking a smoother, more refined distance experience. This comes partly from the classy visuals and techy details as well as the feel.

As expected given the lofts, the Epic Forged produced exceptional distance. Our average 7-iron carry was 192 yards – some shots reached 195 on the fly – with an average spin of 5,100rpm. This isn’t excessively low by modern standards but the relatively low launch averaging 12.1° was a slight concern – slower swingers might find shots reach their apex too early.

The lightweight Aerotech SteelFiber FC (Flight Control) stock graphite shaft helped increase flight height slightly with its progressive tip design.

They undoubtedly feel lighter, easier to swing and smoother overall, like you could hit shots on the range all day. A combination of stability and solid feel certainly helped to control the club-face – our dispersion was surprisingly consistent, albeit to the left of the target.

Callaway Unveils New Jaws Mack Daddy 5 Wedge

Callaway believes its new Jaws Mack Daddy 5 wedges are its most comprehensive to date, offering the best looks, spin, feel and versatility of any Callaway wedge.

It starts with the new Jaws groove designed with a 37° wall angle, vastly different to the 5° wall angle used on the MD4 wedge it replaces. This makes the grooves sharper for maximum grip and spin from all types of lies, especially from 80 yards and in for a ‘one hop and stop’ flight.

The walls, edges and angles are milled into the face with extreme precision to achieve the sharpest edges and tightest tolerances, which should result in more consistent spin and more predictable reaction on landing.

Not only are the grooves great, but there are also grooves between the grooves. Three raised micro ridges to be precise – these raised ridges help to grip the ball’s cover thanks to increased friction. In fact, there are 84 different contact points to promote extra spin.

The Jaws MD5 wedges are constructed from 8620 mild carbon steel and the Centre of Gravity (CG) of the wedges is precisely placed to create a soft, crisp feel. A big focus has also been on the shape of the wedge, with Roger Cleveland using his 23 years of experience to create a profile that is appealing from all angles.

The Jaws MD5 wedges between 46° - 52° are slightly smaller compared to wedges lofted 54° and above, to create a natural shape-progression from the short-irons to the highest lofted wedges. They retain the row of four ports and medallions on the back of the head and come in two premium finish options of Platinum Chrome and Tour Grey.

For enhanced versatility there is a new low-bounce W Grind based on Tour player feedback asking for a grind that delivers increased playability around the green while still allowing them to employ the sole’s entire bounce on full shots. The C-grind has been updated to increase versatility around the green by reducing the bounce angle, widening the middle section of the sole and increasing the heel relief. Additional grind options include S-grind in every loft, the X-Grind in 58° and 60° and a higher bounce W Grind.

The Jaws MD5 will be available in Callaway Customs with 10 color zones and new medallion paint-fill color options and stamping choices, giving golfers more ways than ever to personalize each wedge and make it their own.

Callaway Epic Flash Hybrid Revealed - Callaway's latest hybrid promises more distance and forgiveness thanks to cutting-edge technology

Callaway Epic Flash Hybrid Revealed

Callaway has expanded its Epic Flash metalwood range with the addition of the Epic Flash Hybrid, engineered with advanced technologies to deliver total performance for enhanced distance and forgiveness.

Increased ball speed comes from the inclusion of Callaway's Jailbreak Technology, featuring two internal bars that link the crown with the sole to stiffen the face and transfer more energy at impact.

New Metal-Injected Molding (MIM’ed) tungsten weights have been designed into each pear-shaped head to optimise launch and ball flight characteristics. One is precisely positioned inside the hybrid, and a second is located on the sole to perfectly manage swing weight.

This process uses finely powder metal, significantly heavier than steel, to create precision engineered parts that are then strategically set to improve the performance of each club.

For the first time in a hybrid, Callaway has also used a Triaxial Carbon fabric called T2C in the crown – the same material used in the Epic Flash Drivers.

Its tighter weave allows further weight to be removed from the crown and redistributed lower and deeper within the head to promote an easy launch, increase forgiveness and enhance both distance and accuracy on miss-hit shots.

“A wide spectrum of playing abilities will see significant performance gains from these new hybrids, which sit between our current Big Bertha and Apex product lines, and will most likely appeal to the 6-15 handicap range. You might have seen Phil Mickelson using a very different looking ball en route to winning the A&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year.

It was in fact a new version of the Callaway Chrome Soft X that featured the Triple Track alignment system, which we first saw on the ERC Soft model launched in January.

But now it is available on Callaway's most popular tour ball offering, using Vernier Hyper Acuity to improve alignment compared to a regular side stamp alignment aid. It's likely Mickelson will use this ball at Augusta this week for the US Masters, a tournament he has won three times.

The Chrome Soft X ball combines Tour-proven performance with a soft feel and mis-hit forgiveness.  This is largely down to Callaway's groundbreaking use of Graphene within its Dual SoftFast Core as well as a new, larger inner core that maximises compression energy while minimising driver-spin and promoting high launch for long distance.

There's also a thin, ultra-soft premium Urethane cover that generates more spin on pitches and chips and helps provide a softer feel, along with the low compression core.

As a result of these technologies, golfers are said to expect to experience a very fast and soft-feeling ball with high launch and low spin off the driver for long distance, more workability from tee-to-green, and shot-stopping spin with increased control from irons and wedges.

Other players using the Chrome Soft X ball include Francesco Molinari and Xander Schauffele, who have both also won on the PGA Tour this year. It remains to be seen if they will switch to the Triple Track version.

This model is aimed at golfers seeking extra distance from their iron shots.

Key technology Faster ball speed and easier launch comes from the Suspended Energy Core, which comprises a floating tungsten weight suspended within Callaway’s urethane microspheres deep within the head. A thinner and faster 360 Face Cup – a shallow, flexible rim around the perimeter of the face – combines with the high launch from the Suspended Energy Core to deliver longer ball flights.

How we tested We hit the 7-iron from the set on the launch monitor and then also on the range at West Hill to assess ball flight as well as true feel and sound.

Looks The smoked PVD finish creates a premium, anti-glare look. There’s a fair amount of offset but the top-line appears relatively thin for a distance iron. It sets up very inviting to hit behind the ball with the bottom white grooves assisting with alignment.

Performance This iron produces very fast ball speeds and very low spin, which contributes to extreme carry distances but still on a relatively high ball flight.

Everything about the Big Bertha iron has been designed for distance. At 26°, the 6-iron loft is strong, although it is the same as the Rogue iron. Yet, we got 3mph more ball speed and ten yards more carry distance on average with Big Bertha. Admittedly, the KBS Max shaft is 0.25 inches longer and the swing weight a touch lighter, but this also helps flight the ball higher.

The feel off the face is incredibly hot and very solid, almost metalwood like, and even poor strikes achieve good yardage. The very low spin won’t be beneficial for everyone; Rogue seems to be more playable for a wider spectrum of golfers and a little more affordable.

Callaway Apex 19 Irons Review - Neil Tappin reviews the new Callaway Apex 19 and Apex 19 Pro irons at West Hill Golf Club

Callaway Apex 19 Irons Review

We’ve been excited for the arrival of the new Callaway Apex 19 irons, such was the high level of performance we experienced from the previous generation launch way back in 2015.

Apex irons are synonymous with great feel while providing distinct differences in looks and performance between the two models and this continues to be the case with the 2019 models, thanks to the addition of Callaway's Urethane Microsphere technology. You can read more about that here.

The Apex 19 iron is a little thicker than the Apex Pro, has stronger lofts (7-iron is 30.5°) and a hotter feel. Conversely the Apex 19 Pro is more traditionally lofted (7-iron 33°), is more compact and offers a softer feel preferred by the low handicapper.

We tested them both indoors on the Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor at outdoors on the range at West Hill Golf Club to get a flavor of the flight as well as the true sound and feel both irons provide.

Apex does look thicker than Apex Pro, especially in the topline, but the hitting area remains similarly compact from heel to toe, which may create anxiety among aspirational mid-handicappers prone to the occasional hosel rocket.

It also has a more brushed finish, which we actually prefer over the slightly more shiny look of the slimline Apex Pro.

Naturally the Apex iron flies further, for us it was around 15 yards further on average – a big difference you’ll agree, and it also spun over 1000 rpm less.

There wasn’t a great difference in height but the lower spin may be a concern for slower swing speeds. That said, at 5000rpm on average the spin rate is actually high compared to many other irons on the market with this loft.

Both reward centred strikes with consistent distances. The Apex Pro seemed to be more adept at maneuvering the ball through the air and certainly has a quieter, softer more muted sound at impact you come to expect from a forged club.

The Apex is an excellent all rounder, providing a little bit of everything, notably some extra forgiveness on slight mishits, which will encourage the amateur player.

2019 Callaway Apex Irons and Hybrids Revealed

Callaway has unveiled the long-awaited successors to its popular Apex irons and hybrid ranges for the better player.

The Apex 19 and Apex 19 Pro Irons replace the Apex CF16 and Apex CF16 Pro respectively and will go on sale Jan 25th, sitting alongside the recently-launched Apex MB and X-Forged models.

The new Apex 19 iron boasts a new multi-piece construction that is precision engineered to deliver an unmatched forged design, with innovative ball speed technology, and optimal ball flight and trajectory.

The soft feel comes from a forged 1025 mild carbon steel body and Callaway's urethane microspheres we first saw in the Rogue irons. The urethane microspheres incorporate over one million tiny air pockets that absorb unwanted vibration without slowing the face.

Long, consistent distance in the long and mid irons comes from the 360 Face Cup, which promotes high ball speeds across the face. It employs a shallow, flexible rim around the perimeter of the face that flexes and releases at impact to promote fast ball speed for consistent distance on centre hits and off-centre hits.

Additionally, advanced MIM’D Tungsten Weighing further enhances scoring performance by precisely locating the CG position in each iron while maintaining the flexibility of the Face Cup for optimum launch and control.

To top it off, Apex 19 is crafted with a beautiful players shape in a platinum chrome finish and premium components, including a new True Temper Elevate 95 Shaft and Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 Grips.

The Apex Pro 19 is an iron for better players who want all the benefits of a Tour-level design without sacrificing ball speed or distance. It shares many of the feel and ball speed technologies as the Apex 19, but the more compact look has been shaped by extensive input from Callaway staff players.

To enhance the level of scoring performance and shot-making that the pros demand, an average of 50 grams of Tungsten has been infused into each iron to locate the CG positioning for exceptional ball flight and pinpoint control.

At the top end of the bag is the new Apex Hybrid, which is the first players hybrid to feature Jailbreak Technology.

Two steel Jailbreak bars stiffen the body, placing more impact load on the face to promote fast ball speed and distance. The Forged Face Cup is made from Carpenter 455 Steel, and is designed for increased ball speed at every impact location.

Apex provides the benefits of a hybrid while maintaining the spin characteristics and controlled ball flight of a long iron for better players and Tour Pros. It has a compact shape, a classic PVD finish and comes with a Temper Catalyst Shaft.

Callaway PM Grind 2019 Wedge Revealed - Designed by Phil Mickelson and Roger Cleveland to provide more versatility around the green. By Sarah Wilmore

Callaway PM Grind 2019 Wedge Revealed

Co-created by Phil Mickelson and Roger Cleveland, the Callaway PM Grind 2019 wedge will replace the original Mack Daddy PM Grind.

The PM Grind wedge was custom-built for Mickelson in 2014 with a high toe and large face featuring horizontal and vertical grooves to aid his signature flop shot.

The PM Grind became universally available in 2015, but Mickelson has worked with Roger Cleveland to ensure the 2019 model makes it easier to hit what he believes are the three essential shots:

1. The Knockdown - a low-flying, high spinning shot.

2. The Hit and Check - a short pitch that bounces twice and stops.

3. The Flop - a high flying, steep-landing, fast-stopping shot.

Callaway has developed its Groove-in-Groove technology by machining the micro-grooves into the face at a 20° angle - testing has shown it to increase spin by up to 12 per cent on lob shots compared with the Mack Daddy PM Grind.

Callaway has also increased the offset of the clubface, which it claims will make it easier to move the ball back in your stance and position your hands ahead of the ball when hitting the knockdown.

The face will also feature a higher toe, with reduced weight on the sole and higher centre of gravity to promote a lower trajectory and providing more space high on the face for flop shots from tall grass.

The new wedges will have a C-grind sole, providing relief at the heel and toe for clean turf interaction.

Callaway ERC Soft Headlines New 2019 Ball Range

Callaway has launched a new range of performance balls for 2019, spearheaded by the eye-catching ERC Soft.

The ball, which is named after Callaway founder Ely Reeves Callaway, has been designed to offer a soft feel but also features new Triple Track Technology to aid with accuracy.

Triple Track Technology uses Vernier Acuity Precision, which is the same technology used by planes to land on aircraft carriers, providing greater assistance with alignment compared to a regular side stamp or single line.

The ERC Soft is made with Callaway's largest Graphene-infused Dual SoftFast Core to date, maximising compression energy for extremely fast ball speeds while also generating low spin off the driver and higher launch. The Chrome Soft remains Callaway's Tour calibre offering for 2019.

Also new for 2019 is the Supersoft 19 ball, which combines a new softer cover and HEX Aerodynamics for lower compression and lower drag for a higher flight and longer carries.

The new softer Trionomer cover enhances feel and control, especially around the greens. A matte version of the ball will also be released, available in four different colours - red, orange, pink and green.

The Supersoft Magna offers the same characteristics as the regular Supersoft range - long and feeling very soft - but is larger in size. It is still legal under the  Rules of Golf and helps those that struggle with consistent solid contact.

The high centre of gravity and high MOI allows developing golfers and slow swing speed players to make better contact on the club face to promote a more consistent shot with high launch.

The ERC Soft has an RRP of £34.99 per dozen while the Supersoft 19 and Supersoft Magna are £22.99 per dozen. They all go on sale from February 8th, 2019.

Callaway Epic Flash Drivers Review

The Callaway Epic Flash drivers represent a first in golf, specifically the Flash Face that used a super computer and machine learning to create a more efficient design. You can read all about the technology here.

But does it work? Well we tested both the Epic Flash and Epic Flash Sub Zero models on the Foresight Sports HQ using a reputable premium golf ball in the stock Project X HZRDUS Smoke 6.5 shaft.

We first hit some shots with our Rogue Sub Zero model in the setting we use it in out on the course – 9° of loft with the heavier weight at the back for more forgiveness – to provide a comparison.

Before we talk numbers, lets assess the looks. Both have a green and yellow colour scheme reminiscent of the Jamaican flag. This is not necessarily a bad thing; it certainly catches your eye from afar.

At address, the standard model is noticeably longer from front to back than the Sub Zero – nothing new here. But what is new is the lack of Speed Step and the grey line just behind the front of the crown. It’s purpose is a mystery to us – it’s curved, so doesn’t help with alignment (if anything it makes it harder) and nor does it represent a step in the crown.

Personally, I don’t think it adds anything useful and would rather it was removed – I’ve heard some tour players think the same. The graphics on the face do help position the ball centrally and otherwise it’s pleasing on the eye.

Strike a few away and you notice the sound is different too. On the standard Epic Flash, it is noticeably louder and higher pitched than the Rogue. Move into the Sub Zero model and this becomes even more exaggerated. It’s very loud and has a very high-pitched ‘ping’ sound that does take some getting used to. It’s fair to say that it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

Performance wise, you’ll see we did experience an increase in ball speed when switching from the Rogue SZ to the Epic Flash. This increased further when we lofted down and even further still when we switched into the Sub Zero model.

In fairness, our clubhead speed was increasing all the time too but nevertheless, we hit two shots with 161mph ball speed – something we’ve rarely experienced before.

The average carry of 284 yards was also very encouraging, with one shot carrying 290 yards. The Epic Flash gave us some smash factor readings in the region of 1.48, which is startling efficiency given we averaged 1.43 with Rogue SZ and the Epic Flash Sub Zero. This suggests there are some gains to be had by upgrading, although with a like-for-like club speed they’re likely to be marginal.

Like with the previous generation of Epic, the standard model launches higher with more spin – suitable for the slower swing speed player. For our swing speed of 111mph on average, the Sub Zero was comfortably the best-performing model.

This is the first time a sliding weight has been put on a Sub Zero driver and if shot shape is something you like to accentuate or negate, you will welcome the addition. I personally prefer front-to-back adjustability found on Rogue, switching from low spin/forgiveness to high spin/forgiveness depending on how I’m swinging it.

Rogue is an excellent driver that stays in the range for 2019 and actually has a higher MOI than either of the Epic Flash drivers, so Rogue users likely won't see a huge benefit in switching but if you have a GBB Epic model or older you'll likely experience a fairly significant jump in ball speed and overall performance.

Callaway Epic Flash Woods Unveiled

Callaway has unveiled the new Epic Flash and Epic Flash Sub Zero drivers and fairway woods, set to replace the Great Big Bertha Epic models from Feb 1^st.

The headline technology on the drivers is new Flash Face, said to help all golfers get more ball speed and distance.

It is the product of an $8m super computer, which used Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, a field of computer science that uses statistical techniques to give computer systems the ability to "learn" with data without being explicitly programmed, to cycle through 15,000 face design iterations and over 100 impact simulations. Learning from each one, the computer then arrived at the final design when it could no longer be improved.

The resulting clubface is not like anything made before by Callaway. It’s unique internal mapping consists of dozens of subtle ripples flowing from heel to toe. Though the size, height and configuration of the ripples appears random, they in fact work together cohesively to elevate COR in the face’s centre region.

The distinctive topography on the inner side of the Flash Face is forged from a special titanium and heat treated at 595 Celsius (1100F) for two hours to create a face that combines a low modulus measurement, for flexibility and speed, with excellent strength properties.

Both the Epic Flash drivers also incorporate the latest Jailbreak technology, first featured on the original GBB Epic drivers, that promotes fast, face-wide speed. The two internal, hourglass-shaped Jailbreak bars connect the crown to the sole, stabilizing and stiffening those two parts at impact, allowing the face to take on greater impact load to generate faster ball speed.

“We couldn’t have come up with Flash Face using conventional engineering principles,” said Dr. Alan Hocknell, senior vice president of R&D. “We wouldn’t have gone in this direction without A.I. because it’s non-intuitive compared to previous face technologies, including our own VFT and X-Face. The wave configuration isn’t symmetrical, nor does the pattern seem logical. Yet the ripples work together in a complex manner to maximize ball speed.”

“Employing A.I. allowed Callaway engineers to speed the evolution of face technology dramatically – “Flash Face isn’t something a human would have arrived at any time soon,” said Hocknell.

The Epic Flash and Epic Flash Sub Zero also feature a new triaxial carbon fabric called T2C, which has a tighter weave that takes weight from the crown and repositions it strategically in the head to create a higher MOI.

The Epic Flash also features a 16-gram sliding weight that can promote draws, fades or a straighter flight by positioning the weight in different places on the track.

The Epic Flash Sub Zero model is the first Sub Zero driver to include Callaway’s Adjustable Perimeter Weighting, consisting of a 12-gram sliding weight on a track located at the back of the head.

Additionally, a visible weight is permanently embedded forward in the sole, to pull the CG lower and forward to reduce spin. Heavier or lighter weights can be installed to achieve different swingweights requested through custom.

The new Epic Flash fairway wood also features the new Flash Face Technology to help golfers of every level and swing speed get more ball speed.

It features an ultra-thin, forged Carpenter 455 steel clubface that incorporates Callaway’s Face Cup technology to produce high COR across a large area.

Within the clubhead, Callaway’s Jailbreak again features two internal bars that connect the crown to the sole, stabilizing and stiffening those two parts, and allowing the face to take on greater impact load to generate faster ball speed.

Epic Flash fairway woods also have a new, lighter OptiFit Hosel to make it simple for players to dial in easy launch and flight and combine Jailbreak and adjustability for the first time in a fairway wood.

The Epic Flash Sub Zero fairway features interchangeable 16g and 2g sole weights that adjust the ball flight and spin depending on you preference.

Callaway XR Speed Driver Review

Aimed at The Callaway XR Speed driver is aimed at golfers with slow and moderate swing speeds for whom a lighter feel may increase club speed for added distance.

Key technology Callaway claim the new XR Speed is its longest and most forgiving XR or ‘non-jailbreak’ driver to date thanks to the introduction of a host of innovations, like a new X Face VFT (Variable Face Thickness) and a Speed Step near the face as well as some new shaft offerings. The new carbon composite crown is 45 per cent lighter than that on the previous XR16 for improved forgiveness and efficiency.

How we tested We hit the XR Speed in both the stock Project X Hzrdus and our custom-fitted Aldila Rogue shaft indoors to gather GCQuad launch monitor data as well as on the course.

GM Review

Looks The XR Speed has a much more cutting-edge aesthetic with the blue carbon fibre crown with red trim, Speed Step at the front and slick graphics underneath as well as the trademark rounded Callaway profile. This all contributes to a driver that is easy to align and looks forgiving behind the ball.

Performance When testing against the previous XR16 Pro, the XR Speed delivered faster ball speed, 300rpm lower spin on a stronger ball flight and eight-yard-longer carries on average but it wasn’t quite as accurate overall.

This might be down to the lighter feel, which for many will take some time to adjust to but in the long run, clubface control should improve depending on your tempo. Golfers should also factor in the added forgiveness over XR16, helping mishits fly straighter and with less of a loss of distance.

The XR Speed is certainly a considerable improvement over the XR16 driver. It looks far more pleasing and interesting to the eye, feels and sounds significantly more explosive and has the added performance to back it up.

It’s a very user-friendly offering that the majority of handicaps, after a shaft/loft fitting, will be able to get on with straight away. For us, it didn’t quite reach the heights of the Rogue family, but it was only a few yards short and felt just as solid.

2018 Callaway Chrome Soft Ball Review

Aimed At The Chrome Soft is aimed at golfers who want a ball that offers both driver and iron performance as well as a soft feel and short-game control.

Key technology A new graphene Dual SoftFast core has allowed for a thinner outer core and a larger inner core to enhance the ball’s speed and reduce long-game spin for more distance. A yellow Truvis Chrome Soft option will be available from 19th July this year.

GM Review

Long Game The long-game performance of the Chrome Soft was excellent, even with our above-average swing speed. Distance was comparable to more expensive premium models from other brands, the flight was stable and the spin was low off the tee.

Short Game The Chrome Soft doesn’t just feel soft on chips and pitches, arguably softer than most in the premium/tour ball category, but it grips noticeably on the second bounce with a nice low flight when you catch it cleanly.

Overall The price of tour-calibre, premium golf balls is only going one way (up) but in the Chrome Soft, Callaway has created a ball that performs in all areas of the game and for most swing speeds for less than £40 a dozen.

This is no mean feat, considering the infusion of graphene and the improved urethane cover, and it is more than comparable to balls considerably more expensive than those in and around its price point. It lives up to its name of feeling soft, which most people will enjoy, and has the short-game control to match. But more noteworthy is the fact that the long game performance, especially off the tee, hasn’t been compromised.

The spin is low and the flight stable and strong enough to cater for different clubhead speeds. Fast swingers are likely to see better driver and iron performance from the X version but without losing out on spin around the greens.

Aimed At The MD4 wedges are aimed at golfers looking to be custom fitted for their wedges to get the optimum loft, bounce and grind for their games.

Key technology Groove-in-Groove technology comprises three raised micro-ridges along the length of the hitting area. Between these ridges are micro-grooves that help grab the ball’s cover to increase spin. An extra ‘Nip-It’ groove near the leading edge enhances spin on short and/or slightly thin shots. A system of four weight ports allows the head’s CG to be positioned progressively upward as loft increases for a soft, solid feel on every shot.

How we tested We took a variety of loft and grind options out on the course during a full round.

Looks Slightly rounded in shape and with a subtle curve to the leading edge, but generally very pleasing on the eye. The darker finish will reduce glare.

Control Levels of spin on a variety of greenside shots were exceptional. Even from questionable lies and bunkers, the ball noticeably checked up on the second bounce. It was obvious from the low ball flight on short pitches that the grooves were grabbing the ball very efficiently.

Performance You’ll struggle to find a wedge that spins more than the Mack Daddy 4. This trait will help nervy chippers be more committed to their shots, it should make getting up-and-down from tough situations an easier task and also creates a lower flight on full shots that is easier to control.

The grind options are another asset – the wide-soled, high-bounce W-Grind is surprisingly playable and provides more margin for error, especially from bunkers, while the C-Grind provides the versatility skilled players look for. The X-Grind is a useful addition, allowing you to slide the club under the ball with an open face without it digging into the turf.

They feel soft and stable and the flight across the lofts was pretty consistent. The darker finish offered up a marginally more compact look and perhaps, over considerable time, some extra durability.

Callaway XR Speed Driver Unveiled - Callaway has revealed the driver to replace the XR 16 in the XR Speed, said to be faster and more forgiving

Callaway XR Speed Driver Unveiled

Set to replace the Callaway XR 16 driver in May this year, the new XR Speed is said to take aerodynamic performance and clubface effectiveness to new heights, making it the longest and most forgiving Callaway XR driver model to date.

On sale from May 8^th, it benefits from a new X Face VFT (Variable Face Thickness) designed to maximise ball speeds across the entire face. Callaway says it is the lightest, most flexible and hottest face it has ever designed.

The carbon composite crown on the XR Speed driver is 45 per cent lighter than the titanium crown on the XR 16 model, which significantly improves the mass properties and lowers the centre of gravity for improved forgiveness with increased distance.

Refined aerodynamics with improved airflow over and around the head comes from the latest Speed Step on the crown near the face for faster clubhead speeds.

To boost performance even further, the Project X HZRDUS shaft is now available in the new XR Speed Driver and the stock shaft length is 45.5” to help increase speed further. It is one of the most premium after-market shafts available and has been used in the GBB Epic driver.

“Rogue and Epic are both off to outstanding starts but the feedback was that there is still a significant number of golfers who seek excellent performance but their budgets can’t quite reach to the Epic and Rogue price points,” Dr. Alan Hocknell, Callaway head of R&D, told GM.

“Therefore, we set about the challenge of creating the best ‘non-Jailbreak’ driver possible. XR Speed delivers up to a six yard total distance gain over XR 16. Relative to a standard Rogue Driver, golfers will see a little more backspin and a slight increase in the right to left (draw or anti-slice) tendency. This makes the club a little easier to get up in the air overall and a little straighter for most players.”

Joining the XR Speed driver is the non-adjustable XR Speed fairway, which boasts a re-engineered Hyper Speed Face Cup which turns impact energy into an increase in ball speed across the whole face.

A refined Speed Step promotes faster swing speeds with no additional effort while the shallow face design, coupled to Callaway’s legendary Hawkeye sole configuration, makes it forgiving and easy-to-use for all levels of golfer.
