Bushnell says the Tour Hybrid is its first rangefinder to feature Slope compensated laser distances as well as Slope compensated GPS distances. They claim it will confidently make club selections with both lasered distances to the pin as well as GPS-powered front/center/back yardages right in the display, so no checking smartphones or needing a signal to get the information, just consistent, precise GPS and laser readings every time.

Bushnell rangefinders are used by 98.6% of PGA Tour pros, and they say its patented Slope technology and algorithm outperforms competitors by factoring in ball trajectory, and not just elevation, which means you get the most accurate "plays-as" distances from both laser and GPS, for the first time in one device.

In his review, Dan also loved how the built-in GPS picked up his location without any user interaction. In terms of technology, Bushnell's latest rangefinder has Slope-Switch Technology is easy to access via a button on the side and benefits from an improved slope algorithm for more accurate distances. A red ring now flashes as JOLT vibrates to give the golfer even greater feedback and confidence to know when they have locked onto the flag. The Bite magnetic mount allows the laser rangefinder to be secured to a golf buggy without the need for any aftermarket accessories.

Bushnell continues to lead through innovation in the laser rangefinder category with the Tour V5 Shift, which has been slimmed down to make it more compact in your hand. With 7 pounds of pulling force, it is unlikely to fall off even when going over large bumps – it certainly hasn’t for us yet.

The new design of the fastening strap on the grey and vibrant orange carry case hasn’t gone unnoticed – meaning it fastens closed much more easily. All in all, this rangefinder provides a simple yet premium experience. You won't struggle to pick out the flag or other points of interest and the shape is much more ergonomic. You may find that budget golf rangefinders claim to offer a similar experience but it's unlikely they will offer the speed, clarity and accuracy of the Bushnell Tour V5 Shift.

Bushnell has been quick to improve one or two other areas of the device, too.

The screen is slightly larger than its predecessor and because the text is 40 per cent larger, it’s easier to read, and should give users no problems even in bright sunlight.

The upgrade also sees the addition of a Bite magnetic cart mount and new Bite cradle, so it stays securely fixed. 

Considering the size, Phantom 2 packs a big punch.

Of course, you can’t use such a feature under the Rules of Golf, but the device has a simple switch that allows you to turn slope mode on and off, so you can use it when you play in competitions as well as reaping the extra benefits in friendly games or practice rounds.

We think it’s worth paying the extra as we believe that seeing how yardages are adjusted when using the slope mode will give you a better understanding of the effect slope will have on clubbing in competition rounds when you’re only able to eyeball the terrain.

A little extra weight has been added to the Pro XE making it very stable, even in windier conditions, and you’ll find you can pick out pretty small targets even at relatively long distances. It’s quicker to use than a GPS unit and it allows you to be absolutely sure on distances and to pick out any target you wish.

A useful feature is a magnetic mount that allows the rangefinder to be secured to a cart or trolley. The Pro XE is ideal for golfers who want fast distances to specific points. Taking into account new factors that influence the distance the ball will travel should give you a greater chance of hitting your iron shots closer.

Bushnell Phantom GPS Revealed - New compact GPS is now easy to clip on to your bag or belt and features Bluetooth for fast updates

Bushnell Golf is introducing an innovative Phantom GPS device with new technologies that make it one of the most simple-to-use distance measuring devices on the market.

Replacing the Bushnell Ghost GPS, the slimline Phantom comes preloaded with more than 36,000 courses and provides simple measurements to the front, middle and back of the green.

New for 2018 is “Bite Technology”, which incorporates a high-powered magnet that ensures the Phantom can easily attach to a belt, electric trolley or any metal surface, providing quick and easy yardage readings.

Meanwhile, Bushnell’s latest GPS innovation also integrates Bluetooth technology, which works in sync with the Bushnell App, meaning the golfer can make course updates quickly and easily through their mobile phone.

For pros, mapping out the golf course beforehand can be the difference between winning and losing

How Do Tour Pros Map Out A Golf Course?

Mick Doran is Eddie Pepperell's caddie and has worked with other European Tour stars such as Lee Westwood.

We spoke to Mick following Pepperell's win at the Qatar Masters and the veteran caddie told us about the importance of course management, planning ahead, playing to your game and being able to adapt to the conditions.

Practice rounds are key to professional golfers and their caddies, because they allow them to plot their way around the course and put together a game plan of the week.

According to Mick, this process starts with the yardage books.

"So first thing you get are the yardage books, and its got everything in there, you’ve got the grids of the greens so everything is done in 5 yards so you know where the flag is going to be."

"Yardage books these days you’ve got spots on the fairway, you’ve got spots on the side of the fairway, you’ve got numbers from the back and the front of a bunker."

In practice rounds, Mick gets some extra help in the form of his Bushnell laser, which he uses to get an immediate yardage reading.

"The yardage books are so detailed, but I use a laser during practice and I just zap the flag and it makes it a little easier."

"Having the correct yardages is hugely important, and can be the difference between winning and losing. A big part of tournament plays if of course management, playing to Eddie's game and adapting."

Mick notes how during the practice rounds the wind was calm but throughout the week the wind picked up.

"So first hole, practice round we was hitting driver on the first hole, par 5, but come tournament day the wind had changed, the wind was kind of more off the right and slightly into, so we got this strong (Callaway XR) 3-wood which we use quite a bit its his favourite club. Couldn’t reach in two so, but we could carry the bunker and wouldn’t run out of fairway so its going to play as a three-shotter."

The wind forced Eddie and Mick to adapt their plan throughout the week, to the extent of picking different clubs to play.

"The weather changed so I suggested to him to put the 3 iron in the bag instead of the 5 wood which would help quite a bit for a tee shot on number 7 where if we had the 5 wood in, it was quite hard to hold the fairway with. The 3 iron is just keeping it on a lower trajectory."

Pepperell shot a final round 70 to win by one stroke over Oliver Fisher and had this to say "My course management was very good, Mick was fantastic on that front and I had to just play to my strengths today which I felt were my wedge play and my putting."

I was very impressed with the Bushnell Neo XS GPS watch when it came out in 2014 so testing out its replacement was always going to be interesting. The two main things I liked about the Neo XS was how slim line and lightweight it was as well as how easy it was to use out of the box.

Thankfully, neither of these highlights are lost completely on the new Bushnell Neo iON. It’s not quite as compact on the wrist as the Neo XS but it’s just as simple to get going and navigate through the various features.

The best GPS devices of 2016

The longer battery life of three rounds will please the more unorganised golfer who forgets to recharge their device after playing. Out of the box, it comes fully charged and there’s no need to sync it up to your computer – it’s ready to use and will automatically detect your course when you get to the first tee. It will automatically move holes as you do and on the odd occasion it doesn’t, one push of a button will set you right.

But the most useful feature, aside from the usual front, middle and back distances (which proved to be very accurate, by the way) is the hazard and dogleg information.

It can be difficult when solely using a GPS watch to implement the correct strategy on a hole you’ve not played before from the tee. This information (up to four hazards per hole) gives you a clearer picture in your mind of the shots required to play the hole correctly.

It is also one of the comfiest GPS watches to wear. The soft, flexible strap means you can achive a snug fit without is feeling uncomfortable or being aware of it during your swing or when walking between shots.

You can, if you wish, put it on before you tee off and not need to press another button until you finish – this fuss free use will please the majority of golfers that opt for the simplicity of a GPS watch over a laser rangefinder or handheld GPS device.

The charging clip makes restoring full power a simple task and the cherry on top is how the styling makes the watch look like an off-course digital watch, albeit a cheap one.

Golf Monthly's Bushnell Tour V4 laser rangefinder review, the replacement of the popular Tour V3 which now has an extended range, faster focus and quicker distance display

The Bushnell Tour V4 JOLT laser is the long-awaited replacement to the popular Tour V3 JOLT model, a favoured choice among amateur golfers up and down the country.

The new Tour V4 is 30 per cent smaller and lighter, making it fit perfectly in your hands and even your pocket. It also has a new Fast Focus system that allows you to adjust the focus with the same finger you use to fire the laser.

A change in the Rules of Golf, specifically rule 14-3 regarding artificial devices that came into effect from January 1^st 2016, means that slope lasers can now be used in competitions providing the function is disabled and there is a local rule in place allowing distance measuring devices (which most golf clubs in the UK have).

This means that golfers will be more encouraged to buy the Slope version of the Tour V4 JOLT (£315), distinguished by its red trim on the front of the unit, knowing they can disable the feature and use it legally in competitions. This is ideal for golfers that play lots of different courses, lots of competitive rounds that involve practice rounds, or hilly golf courses.

While the Tour V4 is certainly more compact, the 'Stabi-Grip' rough surfaces around the points at which it is in contact with your hand mean you don’t lose out on stability. It can be a little time consuming to turn the slope function on and off (it took us a few goes to master it) and the focus toggle is a little too stiff for our liking, but other than that the Tour V4 improves upon the Tour V3 and is certainly useable with just one finger.

Increasing the range of the JOLT feature will please lower handicappers that hit the ball a long way and want to know the exact distance to pins on approaches to par fives. I even managed to pick out a flag that was 390 yards away, very impressive!

As always, Bushnell hasn’t scrimped on the carry case, which has a premium look to it and clips easily to the bag to allow swift access. The battery meter is another reassuring feature, keeping you updated on when you need to buy a replacement.

The NEO Ghost comes pre-loaded with more than 33,000 courses and provides measurements to the front, centre and back of the green.

It also has the capability to display up to four hazards per hole, as well as featuring auto course and auto hole recognition and a shot distance calculator.

The long battery life also means golfers will be able to play at least three rounds before charging the device.

The Bushnell NEO Ghost is designed to sit on belts or bags through the use of a multifunctional clip.
