It does this thanks to a new Ghost Slot, a crown slot that is nearly invisible. The Tight Lies also features a refined “barbell” cut-thru slot that creates even faster ball speeds and a higher launch than previous versions. An upside down head shape and tri-sole also make them very versatile.

Adams Tight Lies 2 - Golf Monthly test verdict

Adams in renowned for its easy-to-hit hybrids, and it has used all that experience to create one of its best lines to date. The Adams Tight Lies 2 fairway and hybrid not only deliver on value for money at under £150 each, but on performance categories across the board too, including distance, forgiveness, control and feel.

As their name suggests, the Adams Tight Lies 2 woods are best used off the deck, with the shallow face height perfect for nipping balls away in a way that larger headed clubs often struggle with. On the flip side, this does make them less forgiving on mishit tee shots, so consider that payoff depending on when you use yours the most.

It's also worth noting their look at address too, with the new Ghost Slots completely invisible when you're stood over the ball. This leaves wonderfully shaped clubheads that fill you with confidence, and glare free black crowns that won't distract you.

We tested the 16° 3-wood and 19° hybrid, which left a nice even gap, but other options include 14°, 16°, 19° and 22° Adams Tight Lies 2 fairway woods, and 22°, 25° and 28° Adams Tight Lies 2 hybrids.

The Golf Monthly test team's Adams Blue irons and hybrids combo set review, featuring an Easy Launch System to help golfers get the ball in the air more easily

Specs tested Hybrid – 19°, 55g Aldila SlimTech stiff shaft; Irons – 5-PW, True Temper Dynalite SlimTech 85g stiff shaft.

Replacing Adams’ change of philosophy means that Blue is a new product line for the brand aimed at the game-improver and beginner

Address view aesthetics In the irons, there are plenty of features on show that should boost the confidence of the improving golfer, such as the thick top line and offset. The straight leading edge and premium finish add to what is a superb looking golf club.

Shelf appeal The fact these clubs are designed to work straight off the rack gives them immediate shelf appeal, and the stylish blue colour scheme only serves to make them even more eye-catching to the passer-by. The two-tone blue on top of the hybrid looks great, but also aids alignment.

Shaft Whether you opt for steel (85g) or graphite (55g) in the irons, you’re sure to experience a club that feels light and easy to swing. Adams’ SlimTech offerings found across the range become narrower towards the tip, creating more kick through impact and a higher launch – something that will help most golfers achieve more distance.

Head construction An Easy Launch System comprises barbell-shaped Velocity slots to increase forgiveness and maintain ball speed on mishits, while a low and back CG position increases launch and spin. This keeps the ball in the air for longer – something newcomers to the game will really appreciate.

Head design As well as the Easy Launch System, there’s also internal draw-biased weighting in the heads to help negate the slice. It was certainly easy to turn the ball over from right to left, which also helped increase total distance even further.

Adjustability Not on offer here – Adams is keeping its clubs simple and not bamboozling golfers with technical jargon. Yes, there’s plenty of technology on offer in Blue, but you don’t need to tinker with multiple hosel settings or go through a full custom-fit session to experience the benefits.

Forgiveness One of the strongest assets for both the irons and hybrids. They’re large, but not overly so, and it felt like there was a lot of help from the clubhead to rescue a poor strike. Loss of distance and accuracy was minimal on slight mishits, meaning you’ll find more greens than you expected.

Distance The lofts of the Blue irons are fairly traditional, which is surprising given how easy they are to launch. Most will experience a higher flight with more carry, except when hitting into a strong breeze, and distances were fairly consistent. The hybrids offer an easier-to-hit alternative to long irons.

Flight Given how much technology is designed to increase launch, it was nice to see the ball not balloon up significantly, even with a faster-than-average swing speed. The ball goes higher, but without excessive spin, and the trajectory is still strong enough to achieve good carry. The hybrids provide exceptional stopping power into greens.

Impact sound and feel The sound is quite nondescript, something many will see as a good thing – neither too loud or quiet through the hit. The feel from the middle was superb – firm but fast, like maximum power had been transferred from club to ball. The distances achieved proved this.

Full details... The Adams Blue hybrid is available in four lofts of 19°, 21°, 23° and 25° at £129. The irons come as either a combination set including two hybrids and 5-PW at £599 steel, £699 graphite, or as just a 5-PW iron set at £399 steel, £499 graphite

The Golf Monthly test team's Adams Red hybrid review, a new model that features adjustable sole weights that change the draw or fade shot shape.

Replacing The Red replaces the Pro model, a non-adjustable hybrid with a Velocity slot on the crown and Cut Thru slot on the sole.

Address Aesthetics One of the very few criticisms of the excellent Pro hybrid was that the slot in the crown was a little distracting on the otherwise great-looking head. This has been addressed and while the slot remains under the hood it is now hidden. As a result the Red looks stunning behind the ball, compact without being intimidating.

Shelf appeal The Red hybrid looks great whatever angle it is viewed from. The slot in the sole has also been filled in, meaning that it still performs but does not now get clogged up with mud, which was an annoyance in the Pro model.

Shaft The Matrix Altus shaft works brilliantly with the head to offer a high launch without the ball ballooning too much.

Construction The Red follows on from the Pro models in that it features slots in both the crown and the sole to offer added forgiveness on shots from a wide area on the face. The slots also help to offer a high flight so that shots into greens stop quickly. Adams’ upside-down head design lowers the centre of gravity, which also helps to produce a high flight from the turf.

Head design While other brands have made hybrids that are big enough to be mistaken for fairway woods, the designers at Adams have kept the head compact (95cc) to help ensure that it can cope with a variety of lies. It does this not only through its size, but through its upside down face design which reduces turf contact.

Adjustability For the first time this is an Adams hybrid with an adjustability system unique to the marketplace. Two 2g weights and one 12g weight in the sole can be moved around to affect the shot shape produced. Placing the heavy weight in the toe creates fade bias, while putting it in the heel creates draw bias.

Forgiveness The head design and the slots undoubtedly make this more forgiving than the compact head would suggest. Shots that impact high and low on the face perform particularly well. The compact head means that the Red works well from tight fairways, rough and even sand.

Distance The focus here isn’t on the ball going as far as possible. There are a wide range of lofts available to help fill clear gaps in your bag or replace long irons and/or fairway woods. That said, distance with the Red is up there with the rest.

Flight Higher than you might expect from the lofts on offer, meaning shots into greens stop quicker than they would with an equivalent long iron. Getting the ball up so quickly is also a big help when hitting out of fairway bunkers. That said, if you want to flight the ball down, you can.

Impact sound The sound and feel are outstanding, which is exactly what we have come to expect from a brand whose hybrids impress year after year. They are almost unrivalled in the hybrid category. At the point of contact it feels solid, but not too hard, and the ball seems to compress then spring off the face powerfully.

Spec Available in lofts 16°, 18°, 20°, 23° and 26° with Matrix Altus shaft.

It is our first full year on tour, so to become the most-played hybrid in that time is quite remarkable," said Simon Homer, Head of Adams Golf Europe.

"It's a testament to the tour team and the quality of our products that we have been able to achieve such a monumental shift on tour in such a short period of time."

The award is even more special given the limited amount of players who are paid to endorse Adams products on the European Tour.

Adams also enjoyed its first European Tour victory earlier this season, with Englishman David Howell defeating Peter Uihlein in a play-off at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship to claim his first win in seven years.

Howell had two SUPER 9031 hybrids in his bag, as well as the award-winning Tight Lies fairway wood.

"We believe our hybrids outperform anything else in the category and it's clear from the count that the best players in Europe agree," added Homer.

The two most popular Adams models on the European Tour in 2013 were the Idea SUPER 9031 and the Idea SUPER DHy, which were added to the brand's hybrid line in April.

The clubs utilise Velocity Slot Technology to increase ball speeds and promote additional distance and forgiveness.

XTD Ti fairway woods and hybrids will be available from December 2013 at £219.00 per club.

The XTD irons will also be available from December 2013, at a RRP of £699.99.

Adams launches new Idea hybrid irons

Adams Golf has announced the launch of its new collection of Idea hybrid irons, which feature groundbreaking Iron Slot technology for higher ball speeds and greater forgiveness.

The key technology is a 'wraparound slot', which is specifically designed for golfers with 15-plus handicaps.

Extensive research has revealed these players make the majority of contacts nearly 1/2" towards the toe, not on the sweet spot.

As such, Adams has pioneered new technology specifically designed to enhance face speed in the area where mid- and high-handicappers need it most.

"With a concentration on developing technology that golfers really need, we created these industry-first wraparound slots on the toe to compensate for a very common mis-hit," said Justin Honea, Senior Director of R&D.

"New Idea irons are definitely our easiest to hit, with measurable improvements in ball speeds and forgiveness where players need it most."

This new wraparound technology is employed Adams's Transitional Hybrid irons (7-8), which bridge the gap between hybrids and short irons.

The 270-degree slot starts from the heel area and covers the sole around the club head, all the way to the top line. This allows unsupported face flex, producing higher ball speeds and more forgiveness from off-centre strikes.

These groundbreaking transitional clubs are supplemented by new Idea hybrids and scoring irons.

The Idea hybrids (4-5-6) feature Adams's Cut-Thru sole slots located behind the face, which help produce increased ball speeds, higher launch and additional distance.

The scoring irons (9-SW) are a traditional cavity-back design with wraparound slots to aid with off-centre hits.

The new Adams Idea hybrid irons ships to selected retail partners in November, with an RRP of £599 for graphite shafts and £499 for steel shafts.

Aesthetics:

1) Address view - a great-looking head shape sits superbly behind the ball. The white head and grey graphics aren't distracting in the slightest, and the contrast with the black face makes it easy to set the club square.

2) Shelf appeal - the overall head design is modern, yet understated, particularly compared to its futuristic Super S stablemate. It's a look that will appeal to lots of golfers.

Components:

3) Stock shafts - the 60-gram Mitsubishi Kuro Kage shaft is designed to be powerful, but also provide plenty of feedback. Combined with the LS head, it minimises spin and produces plenty of roll.

4) Adjustability - the FASTfit system offers the ability to adjust loft, face angle, swing weight and even length - by adding a 0.5-inch tip on to the club. Changing the club is a little more complicated than some, but there are plenty of settings available.

Technology:

5) Construction - the centre of gravity is positioned very low and back in the head, which helps to make this Adams' lowest-spinning driver ever. A deep face ensures the launch is still high, though.

6) Face design - this is the first time Adams has used Velocity Slot Technology in a driver. The slot in the sole of the club, behind the face, is deeper in the heel and toe to increase the sweet spot across the face.

Performance:

7) Feel - while the Super S offers slightly more forgiveness, the LS provides plenty of feedback on where the ball has left the face. Off the middle, it sounds fantastic - powerful, without being too loud.

8) Flight - The difference in flight between the LS and S heads, set at the same loft, is significant. The S hits the ball higher, while the LS offers far more control for those with medium to fast swing speeds.

9) Distance - This is one of the longest drivers we've tested recently. Find the right setting, and it produces fantastic results from the middle of the club.

10) Forgiveness - The Super S version will provide more consistency for those with an erratic driving game. The Velocity Slot Technology means shots that come off the bottom of the face still produce impressive results.

Adams Golf has refined its legendary Tight Lies fairway wood and re-introduced the product to the market.

It will be launched initially as a 16-degree 3-wood with other loft options available later.

The original Tight Lies fairway wood was a huge success for Adams back in the mid-90s, and the updated model retains many of the same design elements whilst incorporating brand new technology. Velocity Slot Technology in the form of Cut-Thru Slots makes the face twice as hot for increased ball speeds, the Low-Profile Upside Down design allows for a low centre of gravity (CG) and the Tri-Sole design facilitates playability from any lie.

"In the ever-present pursuit of maximum distance, today's fairway woods have become mini-drivers - extremely difficult to hit from anywhere other than from a tee," said Justin Honea, Director of R&D.

"The low profile design places the GC below the CG of the ball, making it easy to hit the ball in the ear. The unique tri-sole design makes it easy to hit from a multitude of challenging lies and then we added a refined Cut-Thru Slot design so this new Tight Lies is twice as hot as the original.

"It's the perfect blend of playability and performance."

The Cut-Thru Slots in the crown and sole create maximum face deflection and the sole design reduces turf interaction to increase performance from all lies. Tom Watson, the eight-time major champion, added: "With the new Tight Lies, we've got a 3-wood that you can control, you can hit it out of bad lies... that's what you want in a golf club."

Tight Lies fairway woods will be available to purchase from September 1. The regular version - with a Bassara Eagle graphite abaft - comes in 14, 16 and 19 degree loft options, and retails at £149.00.

The Tight Lies Tour fairway wood - with a Aldila Tour Blue shaft - is available in 14.5 degrees and will retail at £189.99.

The Adams 2013 range will include new Super S and Super LS families. The Super S range is the first time Adams has launched a full family of clubs under one name. Each club is designed to be easy to hit and appeal to a wide range of golfers. In the Speedline Super S driver (£199.99), golfers, for the first time ever, will have a driver featuring Velocity Slot Technology with a slot in the sole of the club to help provide consistency and longer drives. The head is adjustable between 9.5 degrees to 11.5 degrees of loft. The Speedline Super S fairway wood (£149.99) and Idea Super S hybrid (£119.99) feature Velocity Slots in both the sole and the crown. These are thinner, deeper and longer from heel to toe than previous versions, which allows golfers to easily get the ball in the air without negatively impacting performance. The Idea Super S irons (£499.99 (steel) are designed to blend the stability and forgiveness of hybrids without sacrificing the look or feel of irons. They feature a thinner face for increased ball speed, improved shaping to give the clubs better balance and an undercut design to provide better feel and performance. For the first time the entire Adams wood offering will combine white crowns with black faces, clearly an influence from new owner TaylorMade.

Click here to see a gallery of the new Adams Super S range.

The Super LS driver, fairway wood and hybrid all feature more compact heads than the Super S range along with added adjustability. The Super LS driver (£299.99) also features a Velocity Slot in the sole of the club behind the face. The slot is deeper in the heel and sole to help increase the size of the sweet spot. Adjustability allows the loft, lie, swing weight and length of shaft to be changed. The Speedline Super LS fairway wood and Idea hybrid (both £199.99) feature slots in both the sole and the crown for added forgiveness. The fairway wood also allows for the loft/face angle, length and swing weight all to be adjusted.

Click here to see a gallery of the new Adams Super LS range

Also in the 2013 range are the new Adams Idea Tech V4 Hybrid irons. See below for a Golf Monthly test team first look video.

The Adams Speedline driver is the first driver to be engineered using wind-tunnel technology to improve aerodynamics. The head design reduces drag for more speed and added distance. This is a driver that should suit golfers who like to look down on a rounded head and deep face, prefer traditional tour visuals at address, and want the option to manipulate their ball flight.
